About the Role:

The Yale Center for Geospatial Solutions (YCGS) is seeking a highly motivated Graduate Student Specialist with a strong foundation in cartography, spatial analytics, and scientific programming.

In this role, you will bridge traditional GIS cartography with modern data science workflows. You will craft high-impact web and static maps from complex raster and vector datasets, build reproducible geospatial data pipelines in Python or R, and explore cutting-edge AI-assisted programming tools (such as Claude Code) to integrate climate/environmental platforms like Climate Engine into scientific research and visualization projects.

This is an ideal opportunity for a Master’s student looking to apply advanced GIS, remote sensing, and coding skills to real-world geospatial and environmental research.

Key Responsibilities:

Responsible for designing and re-designing maps to specification for research projects.

Iterating with YCGS staff and stakeholders to produce publication-quality designs.

Assisting researchers with data acquisition, processing, analysis, design, and presentation

Reviewing others' designs and providing constructive feedback for social media posts, website visual content, images, and video graphics drafted by student team members

Ensures adherence to and guides development of YCGS brand standard

Working collaboratively with YCGS staff and students

 

Job Requirements

Requirements:

Cartography & Map Production: Design high-quality publication and web-ready maps using ArcGIS Pro and web mapping suites, integrating diverse vector, raster, and multi-resolution remote sensing layers

Geospatial Programming & Data Pipelines: Write clean, modular Python (e.g., arcpy, geopandas, rasterio, xarray) or R (e.g., sf, terra, tmap) code to automate data ingestion, spatial analysis, and map generation.

Advanced Remote Sensing Analysis: Process and analyze satellite imagery and aerial/drone raster datasets for environmental monitoring and spatial modeling.

Tool & Workflow Innovation: Learn and implement workflows connecting cloud-based geospatial platforms (e.g., Climate Engine, Google Earth Engine) with AI-assisted developer environments (e.g., Claude Code, GitHub Copilot)

Documentation & Technical Collaboration: Maintain organized repositories (GitHub/GitLab) and clear documentation for scripts, data layers, and analytical procedures.

Completed at least two GIS classes and/or Accelerators or equivalent experience.

 A link to a Cartographic/Geospatial Portfolio (or 2–3 sample maps you’ve produced)

Code sample or link to a GitHub repository demonstrating spatial scripting in Python or R.

Preferred:

An eye for detail and a knack for simple, effective design.

Experience in design

Familiarity with brand design principles a plus
