Job Description

Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS) is hiring two part-time student coordinators who will help the team manage our post-secondary success programming for dozens of African secondary school students. This program will run during the fall semester (generally September 9th to December 20th), and aims to provide guidance and support to YYAS alumni as they navigate the college application process (in addition to some planning for other pre-college/gap year experiences and pursue alternative pathways beyond college).

This position will play a key role in the coordination of various alumni programming with close support from the YYAS team. This is a high-impact position as you will have the opportunity to support alumni in receiving offers of admission and financial aid/scholarship at a range of high-quality universities around the globe and discovering varied pathways to success.

Ideal candidates will have a passion for college access in Africa and experience in teaching and mentoring. We especially encourage applicants who are alumni of HALI Access Network organizations/schools (such as Bridge2Rwanda, African Leadership Academy, USAP, etc.) and applicants who have previously taught or mentored with the YYAS program.

Job Requirements

Student coordinators will mentor and supervise participating YYAS Alumni during our YYAS Alumni Pathways Program. Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Supporting alumni research of “good fit” universities through resource development, workshop facilitation, and consultations

  • Helping alumni draft and revise their college application materials

  • Facilitating interactive workshops on various college access topics (e.g. essay writing, test prep, financial aid)

  • Guiding alumni pursuing or considering non-university pathways after secondary school

  • Holding drop-in office hours to assist alumni with any questions or concerns

  • Developing relevant materials and resources for secondary school students

  • Assisting YYAS staff in monitoring alumni progress through data collection

  • Assisting YYAS staff in overseeing our learning management software (e.g. Google Classroom)

Qualifications and Skills

  • Strong organizational, task management, and communication skills

  • Must have familiarity with the U.S. college application process

  • Must be willing to work on occasional weekend mornings

  • Familiarity with the YYAS program (preferred)

  • Experience with college access organizations (preferred)

  • Experience studying in an African country for secondary school (preferred)

  • Experience working with secondary school students (preferred)

  • Familiarity with Google Classroom and/or other learning management software (preferred)

  • Language ability in French and/or Arabic (preferred)

Compensation $16.00 per hour
