Job Description

1.    Duties as histologist-archivist include the need to clean, label, catalog, organize and scan a large collection of glass microscopy slides to be used as a resource for scientists around the world and/or the documentation about the materials (which may include scanning of documents). Locate, sort, clean, catalogue and inventory boxes with histological materials. Arrange boxes on shelves and document – inventory in computer. Learn to distinguishing cellular populations in different brain regions and work on projects investigating the numbers and distributions of different cells (neurons and glia). This requires getting familiar with different brain regions (cortical and subcortical) in different conditions of staining, different orientations, etc.

Job Requirements

1.    Very good organizing skills; attention to detail with accuracy; basic computer skills, do manual cleaning of archived materials; good communication skills: willingness to ask questions and report problems and progress to supervisor; must be able to climb step stool to access slide archive. The applicant needs to have, or be willing to learn, basic knowledge of neuroanatomy and some familiarity with Excel. The candidate needs to be motivated and enthusiastic about neuroscience. Needs to be willing to learn and try new and innovative techniques and specialized neuroanatomy software (e.g., neurolucida, ImageJ, AIforia). Needs to be able to work independently but within a large group of collaborators – needs good social skills.  

Compensation $16.50/hour
Job Level CY25: Level I
Hours 12.0 to 19.0 hours per week
