Job Description

General Purpose:

Under the supervision of Preventive Conservation staff, the Preservation and Conservation Student Assistant will create enclosures and housings for at-risk library collection materials, perform minor treatments on circulating library materials, and other preservation-related activities as assigned. 

Hours of Operation:

9am to 5pm, Monday through Friday

Job Duties:

1.     Measures library materials using a box-measuring device and related software.

2.     Assembles archival boxes and places fragile library materials in housings.

3.     Places fragile library materials in pre-made housings such as envelopes and 4-flap binders.

4.     Performs minor treatment on library materials such as opening uncut pages and tipping in loose pages.

5.     Tracks incoming and outgoing general collection materials for the unit. Ensures that all items from collections are accounted for in the workflow process to document chain of custody.

6.     Packs and unpacks collections materials, following best practices for handling and shipping library collections.

7.     May assist with Preventive Conservation operations, including preparing binding shipments to go out to vendors and reviewing vendor completed work against library systems, as needed.

8.     Follows Department procedures, policies, and guidelines.

9.     Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Job Requirements

Skills & Abilities:

1.     Excellent manual dexterity and/or experience with hand crafts, such as woodworking, making art, or knitting/crocheting.

2.     Excellent accuracy and attention to detail.

3.     Sustained concentration for repetitive tasks.

4.     Ability to push book trucks and lift heavy materials up to 30 lbs.

5.     Reliable attendance and punctuality, self-motivation, and diligent performance.   

Note: Because the position will work in a department that handles special collections, the position offer is contingent upon the successful completion of a background check.

Compensation $17.00/hour
