Job Description

Under the guidance of the Senior Research Computing and Data Analyst, the Student Research Computing & Data Development Assistant will:
1) Coordinate and Support Web Infrastructure
- Maintain, update, and enhance the YSE Research Computing web pages, ensuring timely content delivery.
- Implement new features or functionality, particularly those requiring JavaScript, HTML, and CSS.


2) Provide Research Computing Assistance
- Help evaluate various computing tools and services at Yale (e.g., HPC clusters, Google Earth Engine, DOE/NSF resources).
- Direct faculty and researchers to appropriate platforms (e.g., custom HPC workflows, Cloud options, or low-code development environments such as Outsystems).
- Offer guidance on data analysis including basic Linux, Python, and R.


3) Serve as Initial Point-of-Contact for Research Computing Queries
- Work closely with faculty, students, and staff to troubleshoot software, hardware, and workflow issues.
- Escalate complex problems to senior analysts or external service providers when necessary.


4) Contribute to Development of Training Materials
- Create or update user guides, tutorials, or “how-tos” related to computational workflows.
- Assist with workshops, hands-on demos, and training sessions.


5) Professional Growth and Learning
- Participate in opportunities to learn a range of technical skills, including high-performance computing (HPC) systems, Linux, Python, JavaScript, AI/Chatbot development, containerization, cloud platforms, and more.
- Engage with external HPC or data initiatives (e.g., NSF, DOE) to expand professional network and expertise.

Job Requirements

Required Education and Experience:
- Current enrollment in a Master’s or PhD program, ideally with at least two years remaining in the program.
- Demonstrated interest in at least one of the following areas: web development, HPC, AI/ML, data analytics, or scientific computing.
- Experience with basic programming (e.g., Python, R, JavaScript) and familiarity with Linux/UNIX environments.

Preferred Qualifications
- Background in environmental research, Earth sciences, or relevant interdisciplinary study.
- Experience with web technologies, including HTML/CSS/JavaScript and version control (Git).
- Familiarity with HPC workflows, job schedulers (e.g., Slurm), or containerization (e.g., Docker, Singularity).

Compensation $17.50/hour
Job Level CY25: Level III
