Job Description |
The Yale College Graduate Fellowship in Academic Advising and Student Support is designed for advanced Ph.D. candidates who wish to explore a career in university administration. Each Yale College Graduate Fellow (YCGF) trains alongside new residential college deans, gaining in-depth knowledge of undergraduate policies, procedures, and resources, along with skills for providing holistic advising and support. Under the supervision of the Associate Dean of Residential College Life and the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, Yale College Graduate Fellows contribute to the central operations of Academic Affairs and Student Affairs. YCGF will assist residential college deans in working directly with undergraduates in several ways, including providing routine office coverage for short-term decanal absences and supplemental office hours during peak periods. The YCGF will participate in various YCDO committees, gaining experience with other units of the university, and will take ownership of 3-5 long-term projects. The fellowship runs from August 1, 2025, through June 15, 2026, and takes place primarily in-person. During the initial training in August, a YCGF will work approximately 19 hours/, including some nights and weekends; during term-time, the YCGF will work an average of hours per week. The YCGF will be paid $20/hour. Note: The YCGF may also be invited to step into a full-time interim deanship, should the need arise; were this to happen, the compensation and role would be adjusted accordingly. |

Primary Responsibilities: Required training for new deans. “Dean School” begins in August and continues a few hours per week through early June. Office Coverage for Residential College Deans. Intermittently, the YCGF will work in-person in residential college dean offices to staff office hours, provide academic accommodations as appropriate, and manage any student emergencies that arise. Assignments in Student Affairs and Academic Affairs. The YCGF should anticipate contributing to 2-3 long term projects per year. In addition, the YCGF will provide administrative support in other activities as needed. Areas may include academic advising; exam proctoring; student wellbeing and support; housing; student conduct; time away and reinstatement; qualitative and/or quantitative data analysis. Potential Interim Dean Role: Occasionally, residential college deans take leaves or depart midyear, creating the need for an interim dean. Being an interim dean is a full-time role, requiring a leave from graduate study. The YCDO will work with GSAS to facilitate the YCGF taking a leave and stopping their clock, should they be offered and accept an interim dean role. Benefits and salary would be commensurate with the graduate stipend plus the YCGF compensation. Interim deans take on most of the responsibilities of the absent residential college dean, including but not limited to: Convene or co-convene weekly meetings with first-year counselors (FroCos), help provide general oversight of the college’s FroCo program, and work with FroCos, HOC, and YCDO colleagues to address any emergent issues within the first-year class.
