Job Description

Position: Policy Intern for New Haven Public Schools
Reporting to: Assistant Superintendent of New Haven Public Schools
Compensation: $18/hour
Time Commitment: 6-10 hours per week, 15 weeks per semester

Location: 55 Meadow Street and hybrid

Duration: Fall and Spring semesters (full academic year preferred)

Eligibility: This position is only open to graduate or professional students

 

Position Overview

New Haven Public Schools seeks a motivated graduate student to serve as a Policy Intern, working directly with the Assistant Superintendent of Schools. This position offers exceptional exposure to educational policy development and implementation within one of Connecticut's largest urban school districts.

 

Key Responsibilities

Policy interns will engage in meaningful work that directly supports the district's major policy revision and development efforts, including:

  • Policy Research and Analysis: Conduct comprehensive research on educational policies, best practices, and regulatory requirements to inform district decision-making

  • Memorandum Writing: Prepare clear, concise policy briefs and analytical reports for district leadership

  • Factual Investigation: Gather and analyze data to support policy recommendations and assess program effectiveness

  • Educational Materials Development: Create and draft outreach materials, presentations, and communication tools for various stakeholders

  • Special Projects: Support additional policy-related initiatives as they arise within the district

 

 

Professional Development Opportunities

Interns will gain invaluable experience through exposure to high-level district operations, including:

  • Superintendent's Cabinet Meetings: Observe and participate in strategic leadership discussions

  • Board of Education Meetings: Attend some school board meetings to understand governance processes

  • Cross-Departmental Collaboration: Work with various departments to understand the full scope of district operations

  • Policy Implementation: Witness the translation of policy from development to classroom impact

Job Requirements

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled graduate student with experience in education, public policy, public administration, or related field

  • Strong research and analytical skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities

  • Interest in educational policy and urban education

  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects

  • Commitment to educational equity and student success

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with educational systems and governance

  • Background in data analysis and interpretation

  • Willingness to commit to the full academic year (highly preferred)
