Job Description |
We are seeking a highly motivated Science Communications Fellow to support science communication, research programming, and dissemination efforts across a portfolio of interdisciplinary initiatives. This role is designed for a Yale student interested in science communication, public health, data science, policy, or academic research who wants hands-on experience translating complex ideas into clear, accessible, and engaging formats for diverse audiences. The Fellow will work closely with Jackson Higginbottom, MPH, Program Manager for Public Health Data Science and Data Equity. The fellow will support workshops, lectures, written materials, and digital communications that advance evidence-based research and public engagement. The role also involves the responsible use of generative AI tools to support drafting, synthesis, and workflow efficiency, in alignment with academic and ethical standards. Key Responsibilities Science Communication & Dissemination · Translate complex scientific and technical content into clear, accurate, audience-appropriate language · Draft and edit content for websites, newsletters, email campaigns, and social media · Assist with the development of research summaries, briefs, slide decks, and promotional materials · Support dissemination of workshops, lectures, and research outputs to campus and external audiences Programming & Events · Provide logistical and communications support for academic programming (e.g., workshops, speaker series, trainings) · Assist with event promotion, registration tracking, and post-event follow-up · Help prepare agendas, speaker materials, and run-of-show documents · Support evaluation activities, including attendance tracking and feedback collection Generative AI–Enabled Support · Use generative AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT or comparable platforms) to support drafting, summarization, outlining, and content refinement · Assist with synthesizing background materials, literature, or meeting notes into usable formats · Apply human review and editorial judgment to ensure accuracy, clarity, and alignment with institutional standards · Follow best practices for responsible, transparent, and ethical use of AI in academic and research settings Content & Digital Support · Maintain and update program websites or shared digital spaces · Create basic visual assets using templates (e.g., flyers, slides, social graphics) · Organize and manage shared files, content calendars, and documentation · Support accessibility and inclusion best practices in communications · Support ad hoc research, communications, or administrative tasks as needed |

Job Requirements |
Required Qualifications • Current Yale undergraduate or graduate student in a relevant field (e.g., public health, science, data science, communications, policy, social sciences, or related discipline). • Strong written communication skills with attention to clarity, accuracy, and tone • Ability to understand and synthesize technical or scientific information • Familiarity with generative AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT) for drafting, summarization, or workflow support • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail • Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines independently • Professional judgment and comfort working in an academic research environment Preferred Qualifications • Prior experience with science communication, research, or academic programming • Experience using generative AI tools in academic, research, or professional contexts • Familiarity with digital tools such as Canva, Teams, and content management systems • Experience with social media or newsletter platforms (e.g., Mailchimp, Constant Contact) • Interest in public-facing scholarship, research translation, or community engagement |
