The Yale Library AI Lab’s graduate student consultants provide 1:1 instruction, research support, and request triage for students, faculty, and staff across Yale looking for support with AI-related research.  

Student consultants provide support for researchers at all stages of work, from undergraduates developing thesis projects to faculty building on existing research. This may include consultations to understand more about project needs or advise on the use of modern AI tools; the development of instruction materials such as how-to guides; and the handoff of researchers to other campus support, including other AI experts, experts in statistical analysis, digital humanities, and computational social science, or to research computing experts among others. 

Successful AI Lab consultants will have experience writing and using code in a research context and be well-versed in machine learning in a research context and/or uses of generative AI in a research context. 

Essential Duties 

• Upskill and remain up-to-date on the use of generative AI in academic research, including both practical and conceptual best practices (e.g., evaluation, RAG, model or API integration, etc.) 
• Hold regular office hours both in person and virtually for 4–10 hours a week, providing 1:1 instruction, advice, and referrals. 
• Document patron interactions using digital workplace tools such as Microsoft Forms and LibInsight. 
• Contribute to the development of accessible instructional materials, which may include research guides, tutorial videos, workflow examples, and how-tos.  
• Contribute to the development of a robust triage and referral workflow that routes patron requests to appropriate expertise. 
•  Attend regular team meetings, which may include trainings and collaborative work.
